Tesla Model 3 and Model Y heat pump parts: octovalve, supermanifold and compressor
"Tesla heat pump" is not the name of a single replaceable box. The octovalve, supermanifold, electric air conditioning compressor, heat exchangers, sensors and pumps are a separate unit in heat management. Tesla's service procedures, updated in 2026, also indicate that the installed part number revision, vehicle configuration and required software operations should be checked together before replacement.
The names of "heat pump", octovalve, supermanifold and air conditioning compressor are often confused in disassembled parts ads. This can easily lead to a bad purchase: two units with a similar housing may have different connectors, internal design, part number revision or vehicle-side configuration. The correct starting point is therefore not the title of the ad, but the VIN of the vehicle receiving the part, the total number of the part in it and the current OEM parts catalogue.
What is a certain fact, what is a manufacturer's specification, and what is the conclusion?
- Fact is, the Tesla Model 3 service manual maintains a separate procedure for heat pump and non-heat pump compressors, HVAC units, sensors, and pipes.
- Certain fact: the octovalve is a separately removable component attached to the supermanifold with an electrical connector; the two names are therefore not interchangeable.
- Manufacturer's specification: configuration, heat pump commissioning, venting and performance test routines must be run after some replacements.
- Editor's note: model name, year or external similarity alone is not enough to prove the compatibility of the used part.
Octovalve, supermanifold and compressor: which is which?
The octovalve is a multi-pass coolant valve: it switches the paths between the fluid circuits according to the instructions of the control. In Tesla Model 3 and Model Y public procedures, the octovalve fits onto the supermanifold, has a separate electrical connector, and can be removed independently. This does not make a particular octovalve automatically compatible with all Model 3 and Model Y variants.
The supermanifold is a larger, integrated distribution unit. In Tesla's parts group, this includes the chiller, the liquid-cooled condenser, several pressure and temperature sensors, and various valves. The compressor, on the other hand, is the electrical machine of the refrigerant circuit. The three components work together, but their tasks are different and their inspection after replacement may be different.
Not all Model 3s have the same thermal configuration
The current service manual for the 2017-2023 Model 3 lists heat pump and non-heat pump parts side by side. This is direct evidence from the manufacturer that the “for Model 3” designation is too broad. The Model Y manual also includes separate octovalve and supermanifold procedures, and a separate, newer procedure is available for the 2025 Model Y.
The configuration should not be inferred solely from the year it was put on the market. Date of manufacture, market, left-hand or right-hand drive version, drive version, low-voltage system, and component revision introduced in the meantime can modify the necessary unit. For sure matching, the complete VIN must be queried in the current electronic parts catalog.
Item Number and Revision: Why Does Full Marking Matter?
Tesla's updated July 3, 2026 compressor and supermanifold procedure changelog specifically notes that the part number revision of the installed part should be checked, as the need for a retrofit procedure may depend on it. The same procedure also handles configuring the compressor type and certain coolant pumps. This is a reason supported by the manufacturer's documentation for not omitting the version designation at the end of the part number from the request for quotation.
- Ask for a sharp, full label photo showing all characters and revisions of the part number.
- Enter the full 17-character VIN of the vehicle receiving the part and, if available, the VIN of the vehicle the part came from.
- Record the model, production date, drive version, market and steering wheel location of the donor.
- Check the original number, the successor number and the possible retrofit condition in the current OEM catalogue.
- The number and shape of the connectors is only an additional check; it is not a substitute for matching according to the catalog.
Poor heating or cooling is not yet an octovalve diagnosis
Slow heating of the passenger compartment, insufficient cooling, unusual noise or a thermal management warning can be caused by several different errors. It could also be a sensor, valve, pump, refrigerant, compressor, wiring or control problem. Random replacement of the octovalve is therefore not a diagnostic method.
Tesla's manufacturer procedure also uses thermal alarm verification, targeted valve testing, coolant bleeding, heat pump commissioning, and thermal performance testing. Together, the results of these help to decide whether there really is a component failure and which unit is affected. Clearing the error memory does not in itself prove that the system is error-free.
Internal contamination also matters when buying a used compressor
Tesla provides a separate procedure in the event that a mechanical failure of the heat pump compressor may introduce debris into the air conditioning system. In such cases, the document does not describe a simple compressor replacement: the supermanifold and the compressor may be affected together, and the containment lines and HVAC elements must be flushed with prescribed equipment.
- Ask him why the part was disassembled and if there was any metallic or oily contamination in the system.
- Ask for sealed connectors and professional storage; the risk of moisture and contamination increases when the refrigerant connection is left open.
- Ask for an operating or inspection report, not just that the part was "good before dismantling".
- Negotiate a written guarantee and a return condition in the event that a configuration discrepancy is discovered despite the part number.
Why is installation a specialist workshop task?
The compressor and several associated units are connected to a high-voltage and pressurized refrigerant system. Tesla's EMEA process assumes proper A/C or F-gas qualification, manufacturer or equivalent training, refrigerant recovery equipment, high voltage isolation and manufacturer test procedure routines. This is not a layman's installation area.
In short: parts only after diagnosis
Tesla heat management with a heat pump consists of several units to be identified separately. The good order of purchase: fault storage and manufacturer test procedures, the exact name of the faulty part, VIN-based catalog check, matching of the complete part number and revision, and then the purchase of a part with a documented condition. This reduces the risk of misdiagnosis, incompatible unit and secondary system damage.
