BMW i3 60, 94 or 120 Ah: battery, charging and used car inspection
Between 2013 and 2022, the BMW i3 was produced with an almost unchanged basic form, while the gross energy content of the battery increased from 22.6 to 33 and then to 42.2 kWh. When choosing a used car, therefore, the year of introduction and the external photo are few: the battery generation, AC and DC charging, BEV or Range Extender drive, and the actual condition of the battery must be checked separately.
Ads often just say "BMW i3 2017" or "i3 with large battery". This can lead to misunderstanding. 60, 94 and 120 Ah are not three equipment levels, but three different battery generations. In addition, the date of first registration around the year changes does not prove which system is in the car, and the 50 kW direct current fast charging was not a matter of course for the early examples.
The three BMW i3 battery variants in brief
BMW's 2018 Hungarian press material summarizes the development in one place: the 2013 i3 started with a 60 Ah battery with a gross energy content of 22.6 kWh; The 94 Ah, 33 kWh second generation arrived in 2016; And from November 2018, the 120 Ah, 42.2 kWh version. The external installation size did not change in the meantime, but this does not mean that a removed battery can be replaced without a special inspection and manufacturer procedure.
- 60 Ah: 22.6 kWh gross, usable energy content around 18.8–19 kWh according to BMW technical data of the time; it was available from the launch of the model in 2013.
- 94 Ah: 33 kWh gross and 27.2 kWh net energy content; It was released in the summer of 2016, while the 60 Ah version remained available for some time.
- 120 Ah: 42.2 kWh gross and, according to ADAC measurements, 37.9 kWh usable energy content; BMW introduced it from November 2018 for the i3 and i3s models.
- It's a sure fact: production ended in 2022, after about eight and a half years and 250,000 completed cars.
- Editor's note: the copies on the market today are 4-13 years old, so the actual technical condition and documented history determine the value in addition to the version name.
Don't guess from the year: this is how you identify the specific car
The 94 Ah battery was introduced in the summer of 2016, while the 60 Ah version still remained on the model range. A car from 2016 or later is therefore not automatically 94 Ah. The same is true for imported copies that have been in storage for a long time or previously participated in a battery replacement program. For reliable identification, ask for the car's full 17-character VIN and have the production data and version of the built-in high-voltage battery checked at a BMW dealer or an independent service with access.
- full VIN and exact month of manufacture, not just the year on the registration certificate.
- The vehicle's original equipment list: purely electric i3 or petrol Range Extender, i3 or more powerful i3s.
- The identification, nominal version and installation history of the high-voltage battery can be seen in the diagnostics.
- Photo of charging port and original equipment code, especially on early 60 and 94 Ah cars.
- Invoice or worksheet for any previous battery, charging electronics or powertrain repairs.
- If you are looking for a spare part, the complete part number of the removed unit and a legible photo of the label are also required.
The charging of 60, 94 and 120 Ah is not exactly the same either
According to BMW's 2016 technical bulletin, the 60Ah i3 used up to 7.4kW of single-phase AC charging, while the 94Ah system was capable of up to 11kW over three phases. The announcement described 50 kW DC fast charging for the 60 and 94 Ah models as an optional extra. For this reason, with an early i3 it is not enough to assume that it will be able to fast charge on all public CCS chargers.
In the 2019 car tested by ADAC, the 120 Ah i3 after the model update had 50 kW CCS fast charging as standard equipment, and the ADAC Ecotest measured a range of 270 kilometers. The condition, charging curve and winter range of a specific car may differ from this. When buying, try separately AC charging, which is important for home use, and - if the car has it - CCS charging; a single successful Type 2 charge does not verify the operation of the entire DC system.

- CCS Combo 2 connector: below the Type 2 part, two additional large contacts are visible; this is necessary for DC fast charging.
- Manufacturer data: the 94 Ah battery could reach 80 percent in less than 40 minutes on a 50 kW DC charger under suitable conditions.
- Independent measurement: ADAC's 120 Ah test car achieved a CCS charge of up to 50 kW and an Ecotest range of 270 kilometers.
- Editor's take: the i3 isn't built for today's 150-400kW lightning chargers; the higher rated power of the charging station does not accelerate the car beyond its own limit.
What do range numbers mean in everyday life?
The official rated range data of the three battery generations should not be placed directly next to each other without a measurement cycle. When the 60 and 94 Ah models were introduced, mainly the more permissive NEDC data were included, while the WLTP value was already available for the 120 Ah version. For the 94 Ah version, BMW has set an everyday range of 200 kilometers, which can be reached in bad weather, with heating or air conditioning; reported a WLTP value of 285-310 kilometers for the 120 Ah version.
According to ADAC, the early 60Ah i3 was around 120km in practice, and the 120Ah test car achieved 270km during the Ecotest. These are benchmarks, not promises. A cold battery, highway speed, passenger heater, headwind, tire, load and battery aging can all reduce effective range.
Range Extender isn't just 'more range'
The Range Extender, or REx for short, was available for the 60 and 94 Ah i3 models: a 647cc two-cylinder petrol engine that drives a generator and produces electrical power when the battery is low. In 2016, BMW announced an additional range of up to 150 kilometers under normal conditions. This is a manufacturer claim and does not mean that an old REx car will go that much further in all situations.
In use, the REx represents a separate inspection and maintenance task: there is a gasoline engine, fuel system, exhaust, cooling and additional controls. BEV and REx components are therefore not automatically treated as identical. At the end of the 120 Ah European model cycle, the Range Extender was removed from the range, but you can also find a different combination in cars imported from other markets; always check this based on the VIN and the manufacturer data sheet.
Battery health: ask for proof instead of percentage
The estimated range on the dashboard is not a battery certificate. It strongly depends on the consumption of previous trips, the temperature and the use of air conditioning. ADAC's 2026 Used Electric Car Guide recommends that buyers request a verifiable State of Health (SoH) value, service and inspection records and, if necessary, an independent battery test.
- Ask for a printable or electronically verifiable battery status report, don't be satisfied with the range photographed on the on-board display.
- Check the error codes of the high-voltage system, cell voltage deviations, insulation condition and temperature sensors.
- Try AC and CCS charging, watch for disconnection, error indication, unusual noise and whether the car actually picks up the expected performance.
- Check the bottom of the battery case, lifting points and the area around the carbon fiber passenger cell for signs of damage or improper repair.
- Also check the age and condition of the 12 volt battery, as a low voltage supply failure can cause multiple, seemingly unrelated warnings.
- Compare the measured SoH value with the car's age, mileage and use; a single percentage alone does not describe the condition of the entire vehicle.
What is exchangeable and why do you need an exact part number?
When the 94 Ah battery was introduced, BMW offered an official upgrade program for some 60 Ah cars and emphasized that the two batteries had the same external dimensions. However, this was a controlled factory program, not a general license to install any removed battery. The complete battery, modules, high-voltage connectors, cooling, charging electronics, control software and vehicle configuration form a working system together.
For the same reason, charging electronics, air conditioning compressor, electric heating, drive control or even a connector should not be bought just based on the label "good for BMW i3". For an exact match, you need the VIN and month of manufacture of the car, the 60/94/120 Ah battery version, the BEV or REx version, the i3 or i3s model, and the complete part number of the removed part. Part-number revisions should only be confirmed by up-to-date factory parts information or by the specialist workshop that carried out the installation.
Which BMW i3 version can be a viable choice?
- 60 Ah: it can be rational if you use it for short, predictable city trips, you can charge it regularly, and you include the winter reserve.
- 94 Ah: generally a better compromise for commuting; the 33 kWh battery and three-phase AC charging of up to 11 kW make it noticeably more usable.
- 120 Ah: the longest-range and youngest i3 generation, so it provides the most reserves for longer daily trips and less frequent charging.
- REx: an advantage only if you really need it and bear the extra cost of the petrol engine, fuel system and related maintenance.
- For any variant, documented battery condition, working charging, damage-free construction and verifiable service history are more important than the estimated range in the ad.
In short: instead of three numbers, check the whole car
60, 94 and 120 Ah are good first filters, but they are no substitute for VIN-based identification and technical inspection. The charging port, the AC charging power, the presence of CCS, the BEV or REx drive and the condition of the battery all influence what the car is capable of and what parts go with it. Before buying, ask for an independent battery test, try both charging methods, and when ordering parts, insist on the full part number and confirmation from the service.
