Tesla Model S and Model X MCU1-MCU2 Compatibility: Check Display, eMMC and Part Number
The vertical center display of the 2012-2020 Tesla Model S and the early Model X may look similar from the outside, but the display, Media Control Unit, radio tuner, and Autopilot computer are not the same component. Therefore, it is not enough to choose a used unit based on the year or photo: the complete part number, the VIN of the car, the production time and the professional software association are also important.
In used parts ads, "MCU1", "MCU2", "display" and "main computer" are often used interchangeably. This is misleading. Tesla's service documentation treats the central display and Media Control Unit, the instrument cluster in front of the driver, the radio tuner, and the driving support computer separately. The name MCU1–MCU2, common in the market, is a useful abbreviation, but it is not enough for ordering parts.
What do MCU1 and MCU2 mean?
According to Tesla's current support page, Model S and Model X cars manufactured on or before March 2018 may be eligible to purchase the full infotainment upgrade. This older NVIDIA Tegra-based system is commonly referred to by the market as MCU1, and the faster Intel Atom-based successor as MCU2. However, the exact authorization and built-in hardware are not determined by the year of the registration license, but by the car's own configuration and production time.

The display, the MCU, the instrument cluster and the Autopilot computer are four separate things
The vertical touchscreen is the interface visible to the driver, and the MCU is the infotainment electronics behind it. The instrument panel behind the steering wheel is a separate display unit. The Autopilot or “AI computer” is also separate hardware, even if some display functions change after the infotainment upgrade. A broken touch panel, a blacked-out MCU and a failure of a driving support computer therefore do not require the same part.
Before purchasing, the defect must first be accurately identified. If the central image disappears, but the instrument cluster works, this does not prove that the entire display unit is faulty. If the system is slow or reboots, it could be due to data storage, power supply, connectivity or software. Instead of guessing, an error code and status check is required.
An eMMC upgrade is not the same as a full MCU2 conversion
Tesla's service bulletin SB-21-21-001 addresses wear on the 8GB eMMC. According to the document, in some Model S and Model X cars manufactured before March 2018, the eMMC error can cause a blank or intermittently blacked-out display or a storage error warning message. The factory fix in this campaign was to replace the 8GB storage on the Tegra Visual Compute Module card with a 64GB unit.
This does not make the car an Intel Atom-based MCU2. The eMMC card upgrade addresses the old system's storage bug, while the full infotainment upgrade adds different hardware and new features. When inspecting a used car, it is therefore a separate question whether the eMMC campaign has taken place, and a separate question whether the car has received the full infotainment update.
Why isn't a used MCU simply plug-and-play?
Tesla's service procedure, updated on February 27, 2026, requires owner approval, profile backup, and factory reset before replacement. The item number of the removed unit must be recorded, then the replacement unit must be associated with the car in the Toolbox system, the configuration must be transferred, the VIN must be verified online, and finally, software installation and profile reset must be performed after replacing the parts.
It follows that the physical matching of the connectors does not in itself prove functional compatibility. A unit with an unknown history may contain a SIM or SD card storing personal data, and poorly associated hardware may result in incomplete functions or incorrect configuration. Tesla's procedure specifically indicates that the owner must approve Toolbox access for third-party repairers.
What data do you check before a used display or MCU?
- The car's 17-character VIN and exact month of manufacture, not just the year it was first put into circulation.
- The complete part number of the removed unit, including all hyphens and endings, as well as a clearly legible photo of the label.
- Model S or Model X, left- or right-hand drive, and the region of the car's original market.
- The infotainment and driving support computer can be seen on the central display in the Settings > Software > Additional vehicle information menu.
- The need to keep the FM/DAB radio because the full infotainment upgrade requires a separate compatible tuner and antennas.
- The exact symptom, diagnostic code, and clarification of whether it is a display, MCU, storage, power, or communication error.
- Written confirmation from the service center that the given replacement part can be associated, configured and used with the car's current software.
In the case of a part number revision, the different endings do not necessarily mean incompatibility, but the match can only be verified by up-to-date factory parts information or a specialist workshop working with the car's VIN. The advertiser's claim of "good for all 2012-2018 cars" is not a verification in itself.
What should you pay attention to in the radio and related functions?
According to Tesla's support page, the full infotainment upgrade could add a faster touchscreen, 5GHz Wi-Fi, an LTE-capable modem and more entertainment features. However, the original AM, FM and DAB tuners are not compatible with the new system. To keep FM and DAB, you need a separate radio upgrade, i.e. a compatible tuner and antennas; the AM radio cannot be maintained even with the factory solution.
Some features require a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection or a Premium Connectivity subscription, and Tesla says services using cellular data or third-party licenses may vary. When buying a used MCU, don't just look at the faster screen: check the radio, modem, camera functions and subscription services as well.
This is how you check the system when buying a used car
- Turn on the display in a cold car and observe the start time, restart, flashing, yellowing edges and touch accuracy.
- Open the Additional Vehicle Information screen and take a photo of infotainment, modem and driver assistance computer data.
- Request a service document for the eMMC campaign or the full infotainment upgrade; the verbal statement does not prove which intervention has taken place.
- Try the reversing camera, defogger control, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, radio and cellular connectivity.
- Check the specific VIN in the Tesla app or at a specialist workshop, because the production time is only an approximate filter.
- If the ad says MCU2, ask if there was a full infotainment upgrade or just the MCU1 eMMC storage was replaced.
When is a used part reasonable, and when is an official repair the better route?
A significant portion of the 2012-2020 Model S and early Model X stock may already be beyond the general vehicle warranty, so an identifiable used display or accessory with a proven track record can be an economical solution. However, with a full MCU, due to the software association, radio and car configuration, the service that will perform the installation and Toolbox process must be involved before purchase.
If the car may be affected by the 8GB eMMC campaign, the first thing to do is check with Tesla's VIN and the official service route. For a full MCU2 upgrade, it's also worth comparing Tesla's factory quote with the total cost of used hardware, including compatible radio, installation, configuration, and any warranty.
In short: do not order without a label, VIN and software association
Several separate systems work behind the vertical screen of the Tesla Model S/X. MCU1 eMMC upgrade, full MCU2 conversion, central display replacement and radio upgrade are four separate cases. A used part can be chosen responsibly if the fault has been diagnosed, the complete part number matches the car's data, and the service center undertakes association and configuration in advance.
