OMV eMotion expansion: 28 new charging points in Hungary - what does up to 400 kW mean?
On July 7, 2026, OMV Petrom announced the closure of the EU-supported charging network project connecting Bratislava, Budapest, Nagyvárad and Cluj. In Hungary, 28 new charging points were completed at 7 locations. However, more important than the big numbers is what connector your car uses, how much DC power it can take, and what condition your battery is in.
The development is fresh news that directly affects Hungarian motorists, but the 150, 200 or 400 kW displayed on the charging station alone does not tell you how long a stop will take. The closure of the project is confirmed by OMV Petrom's announcement, and the technical background of the seven new Hungarian stations is confirmed by OMV's Hungarian website. We also used the 2026 analysis of the International Energy Agency for the interpretation of the charging performance, and the EU AFIR regulation for the payment options.
What was completed in Hungary?
According to the announcement of OMV Petrom on July 7, 2026, a total of 384 ultra-fast charging points were established in the project involving the three countries. Of these, Hungary received 28 charging points at 7 locations, Slovakia 52 points at 11 locations, and Romania 304 points at 74 locations. The investment strengthens the corridor of the trans-European transport network, i.e. TEN-T Bratislava-Budapest-Nagyvárad-Cluj.

OMV's current location list includes exactly seven Hungarian stations with four CCS charging points and a current maximum output of 400 kW. Since the OMV's technical information identifies the seven CEF2 locations with 400 kW Ekoenergetyka equipment, based on the two official pages, these correspond to the Hungarian locations of the closed project. This is an editorial correspondence; OMV Petrom's closing statement does not provide a separate list.

Charging point and charging station: why are they not the same?
One location can have several charging equipment and several charging points serving separate cars. The 28 charging points therefore do not mean 28 separate settlements, but a total of 28 simultaneous charging options at 7 locations. According to AFIR's definition, a charging point charges one vehicle at the same time, even if the equipment has several connectors.
The total power of the location, the maximum of each output and the power actually reaching the car are three separate data. If several cars are connected to the same power electronics, the equipment can share the available power. The current OMV location list therefore provides a maximum value per charging point; when planning a route, it is worth looking at this, the number of connections and the current occupancy together.
150 or 400 kW: has the technical content of the project changed?
The early, 2023, OMV Petrom announcement of the project added an installed power of 150 kW for each planned charging point, and also counted on 28 Hungarian points and 7 locations. The current Hungarian website of OMV already states that the Ekoenergetyka equipment used at the seven CEF2 locations is capable of up to 400 kW. The operator does not specify when and how the technical solution changed, so the statement "it was planned to be bigger in the meantime" is only a reasonable conclusion, not a stated fact.
"Up to 400 kW" is the upper limit of the equipment's capability, not a promise for all connected cars. The OMV's Hungarian information sheet specifically indicates that the actual maximum available on site also depends on the network conditions. The maximum DC charge value listed in your car's manual is also a peak value: it does not remain constant during full charge.
Why doesn't the car see 400 kW all the way through?
The charger and the car constantly coordinate the power that can be safely taken. The vehicle's own DC limit, the battery's voltage, temperature and charge, as well as the current load on the site, together determine the result. According to the IEA's 2026 analysis, higher battery voltage may enable higher performance with lower current, but the load capacity and cooling of the cells will still be a limitation.
- At low or high charge, the car requests power according to its own charge curve; Around 80 percent, it usually slows down considerably.
- With a cold battery, the control may be limited. If the car can pre-charge the battery, you should enter the destination in the built-in navigation.
- If the car only accepts 100kW DC, it won't go above 100kW on a 400kW rig.
- Depending on the structure of the equipment, the performance may be divided when charging at the same time.
- The current kW displayed on the charging station or in the application is not the same as the average of the entire session.
For a simple estimate, divide the amount of energy you want to charge into the battery by the expected average performance. For example, 40 kWh of energy with a real average of 100 kW is theoretically 0.4 hours, or 24 minutes. This is a calculation example, not a charging promise: the average may be reduced by the charging curve, losses and conditions.
Which cars can use the new OMV chargers?
According to OMV, eMotion's DC fast chargers have CCS cables, and the system can serve 400- and 800-volt cars. The decisive condition is not the voltage per se, but the European CCS Type 2 Combo connector of the vehicle and the DC charging allowed by the manufacturer. A lower peak performance car using CCS can also connect; it simply charges according to its own limit.
For older models with a CHAdeMO connector, checking is especially important. According to the Hungarian website of OMV, the CHAdeMO DC connector is currently only operated in the underground garage of the Allee shopping center, so for example, the new CCS locations do not mean automatic compatibility for an exclusively CHAdeMO car. Only rely on an adapter if it is specifically supported by the car manufacturer.
Do I need an application and how does payment work?
According to OMV's Hungarian information, charging can be started at a payment terminal with a bank card, OMV card or after registration and contract with the eMotion application. According to AFIR, ad hoc payment must be ensured at public chargers installed after April 13, 2024, and at points with 50 kW or more, a predictable kWh price and possible minute fee must be provided on site.
Prices, packages and promotions can change quickly, so it's not worth burning them into a permanent guide. Before starting, always check the current kWh charge, the possible occupancy charge and the conditions of bank card blocking on the terminal, in the OMV eMotion application or on the operator's official website.
Pre-departure checklist for longer trips
- Check the official OMV location list or app and check the charging point's current status, plug and maximum power.
- Plan to have at least one backup charger nearby in case the first location is busy or temporarily down.
- Check the car manual for the type of DC connector, the maximum power that can be absorbed and the method of battery preconditioning.
- Don't consider a 100 percent charge as the default destination: the high charge range is slower than many cars and can use up the point unnecessarily.
- If the plug or cable is visibly damaged, do not start charging; report the error to the customer service shown on the charger.
- If the power is unusually low, first compare the charge, the battery temperature, the use of the other output and the vehicle's own limit.
In short: the network has expanded, the charging time must still be interpreted together with the car
The 28 new charging points completed at the 7 Hungarian locations are significant network developments, especially on the regional TEN-T route. According to current OMV data, devices capable of up to 400 kW may be more future-proof for faster cars, but the indicated peak power does not equal a guaranteed charging speed. A good stop requires a compatible CCS connector, a properly prepared battery, a lower starting charge and a functioning, free charging point.

Do all 28 new Hungarian OMV eMotion charging points give 400 kW?
This is not what follows from the reported data. According to OMV, the equipment used at the seven CEF2 locations is capable of up to 400 kW, but the current maximum of the charging point, power sharing and the car's absorption capacity may vary by location and session.
Can a 400 volt electric car use an OMV eMotion ultra-fast charger?
Yes, if the car has a European CCS Type 2 Combo connector and supports DC charging. According to OMV's information, the ultrachargers serve both 400 and 800 volt vehicles; the car picks up power according to its own safe limit.
Chargeable Nissan Leaf with CHAdeMO at the new OMV locations?
