Renault Zoe Q210, R240, Q90, R90 and ZE50: charging, battery and parts compatibility
Several significantly different technical versions hide beneath the familiar Renault Zoe body. Q210 and Q90 can accept up to 43 kW AC, R versions are generally limited to 22 kW AC, and the ZE50 introduced from 2019 received CCS DC charging only on certain specifications. The model name, a Type 2 socket or the battery capacity alone is therefore not enough to identify a car, its charging capability or a replacement part accurately.

What do Q210, R240, Q90, R90 and ZE50 mean?
The early Zoe, later identified as Q210, arrived with a 22 kWh battery and up to 43 kW three-phase AC charging. Renault introduced its in-house R240 powertrain in 2015: it promised slightly more rated range and better low-power charging efficiency, but accepted no more than 22 kW AC. When the names changed in 2016, R240 became R90 and Q210 became Q90; the Q and R letters continued to identify different motor and charging systems.
Z.E. 40 was the commercial name for the 41 kWh usable battery family, available with Q90 and R90 and later R110 powertrains. The 2019 update introduced Z.E. 50 with 52 kWh usable capacity and an R110 or R135 motor. Importantly, ZE40 and ZE50 refer to the battery family, while Q210, R240, Q90, R90, R110 and R135 help identify the powertrain version; neither replaces a VIN-based manufacturer lookup.
22 or 43 kW AC: the main charging difference between Q and R versions

These are manufacturer-rated maximums, not guaranteed charging rates. The station, grid, cable, battery temperature and state of charge, and vehicle condition can all reduce the actual figure. The 43 kW rapid charging of an early Zoe is AC, so it is not the same as CCS direct-current charging.
Type 2 or CCS: what can the socket tell you?
The Zoe's charging inlet sits behind the front badge. A car fitted only with a Type 2 socket accepts AC; the 43 kW Q version uses the same socket format. A CCS-equipped ZE50 has two large DC contacts below the Type 2 section. This enables a quick visual check, but does not prove the maximum charging rate.
Renault documentation confirms that 22 kW AC was a core capability of the late Zoe, while the up-to-50 kW Combo CCS inlet was listed separately on certain trims. Do not therefore assume CCS from an advert saying only “ZE50” or “2020 Zoe”: request a photo of the open inlet and verify the equipment by VIN.
22, 41 or 52 kWh: why is the battery not simply interchangeable?
Higher capacity does not mean that any Zoe battery can be installed directly in another car. The complete OEM part number and approved revision, nominal voltage, connectors, mounting, control software and vehicle configuration must match. Battery ownership must also be checked because many early Zoe cars were supplied under a separate battery-lease contract.
Renault did offer an official 22 kWh-to-Z.E. 40 upgrade programme for leased-battery cars in 2017. That was a manufacturer-controlled programme, not general proof that every used 41 kWh pack is interchangeable with every 22 kWh car. The technical, software, legal and insurance conditions of a conversion today must be confirmed for the individual VIN.
Which details are needed to verify charging and parts compatibility?
- the vehicle's complete 17-character VIN and month of manufacture;
- the Q210/R240/Q90/R90/R110/R135 powertrain and 22/41/52 kWh battery version;
- a photo of the open charging inlet and the label on the charging cable currently used;
- the complete OEM number, index or revision and a legible data label for the part being replaced;
- fault codes and the workshop's written diagnosis, especially for charging or drivetrain faults;
- for a battery, proof of ownership, history, condition assessment and safe transportability.
A model year or shortened part number is not enough. Renault's R240 description, for example, presents the charger, power electronics and Chameleon charging system as an integrated Power Electronic Control assembly. For such a unit, the electrical version and software configuration must be checked from manufacturer data in addition to physical fit.
Try these checks when buying a used Zoe
ADAC's recent used-car summary identifies power-electronics failures, electric-motor bearing problems and the air-conditioning compressor as known risks on early cars, and also recommends attention to the brakes and suspension. This does not mean every Zoe is faulty, but it provides a useful basis for a focused inspection.
- Test the car on an AC point capable of delivering the advertised single- or three-phase power.
- For a ZE50 advertised with CCS, also perform a short DC charging test; do not treat the instantaneous kW reading as a constant maximum.
- Request a documented battery-health assessment and interpret the observed range with weather, speed and consumption.
- Confirm in writing whether the battery is included in the car's ownership or remains subject to a lease obligation.
- Listen to the drivetrain under acceleration and regeneration; check the climate system, 12-volt system, brakes and suspension.
- Ask for a VIN-based check of open manufacturer service campaigns and recalls.
When does searching for a used part make sense?
A significant share of Zoe cars built between 2013 and 2024 is now outside the general vehicle warranty, so there can be a real need for inspected used body, interior, charging and drivetrain parts. For a younger car, a battery or a potentially covered defect, however, first ask a Renault authorised workshop to clarify warranty coverage, campaigns and the manufacturer repair route.
